UK Ancestry Visas

Have you got a grandparent who originated from the UK? Are you coming from a Commonwealth country? Are you planning to work in the UK? If so, you could qualify for a visa. Here’s what you need to qualify.

Eligibility

You must come from a commonwealth country or be able to prove that a grandparent was born in the UK, Isle of Mann or Channel Islands, or were born before 1922 in Ireland. They may also qualify if they were born on a ship or aircraft that was registered in the UK.

Family links

You can claim if you or your parents were adopted and if your grandparents were not married.

Maintenance requirements

You must be able to support yourself while in the UK.

Partners and children

Your partner and children can join as dependants if they qualify.

How long can you stay?

Five years. After five years you can apply to extend your visa or for permanent right to remain.

Get an exempt Vignette

If you are not normally subject to immigration control you can apply for an exempt vignette. For example, this is commonly used for diplomats.

Exempt vignettes are available for:

  • Diplomats, or working for a diplomatic mission in the UK, and you were outside the UK when offered the post.
  • Overseas government ministers on official business or travelling with one as part of your job.
  • Members of Commonwealth or Overseas Territories armed forces posted in the UK or training in the UK.
  • Head of states or people working for a head of state, such as on a state visit.
  • Those who are exempt from immigration control for any other reason.

You cannot apply if you come from North Korea.

Frontier Work Permit

If you’re coming to work in the UK from a qualifying country you will need a frontier work permit. This will allow you to work, rent and access benefits including the NHS if you qualify.

  • Who can apply: You must come from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. You must live outside the UK and have worked in the UK by December 2021 and have kept working in the UK at least once every 12 months since you started working here.
  • Your work: Your work must be genuine and effective which means it must be more than a one-off event such as conducting an interview or signing a contract.
  • Residency: You must live outside the UK. This means you’ll have spent less than 180 days in the UK in any 12-month period. You may be able to apply if there were exceptional circumstances which stopped you applying.
  • Family members: The permit does not cover family members.

Domestic Worker in a Household Visa

If you work as a cleaner, chauffeur, cook, a nanny or provide personal care, you could be eligible for a domestic worker in a household visa.

  • About you: You can apply if you are at least 19, have worked with your employer for at least a year and work in their household. You can also apply if you are moving to the UK with your employer and plan to leave within six months or at the same time as your employer whichever is sooner.
  • About your employer: He or she may be a British citizen living outside the UK or a foreigner. Either way they must plan to stay for no more than six months.
  • Finances: You must be paid the minimum wage and have enough money to support yourself while in the UK.
  • Knowledge of English: You must prove you have a working knowledge of English. You can do this by passing an approved English test with at least CEFR level B1 in reading, writing, speaking and listening, or have an academic qualification which is taught in English and is recognised by UK NARIC as being equivalent to a BA, Master’s degree or a PHD.
  • Length of Stay: You must leave after six months or when your employer leaves, whichever is sooner. This is not a route towards having permanent right to remain.

Representative of a Foreign Business

The Representative of an Overseas Business visa is often used for people who are representing an overseas business in some shape or form. It might be a correspondent for an overseas newspaper or someone from a business which is looking to set up in the UK.

To qualify you must be recruited and employed outside the UK by a business whose principle HQ is and will remain overseas, hold a senior position with the authority to make decisions on its behalf and have the skills to do the role. You may also be permitted if you intend to set up a UK branch of the business.

  • Financial maintenance: You must have enough money to support yourself without recourse to public funds and pay the health surcharge.
  • Knowledge of English: You must prove you have a working knowledge of English. You can do this by passing an approved English test with at least CEFR level B1 in reading, writing, speaking and listening, or have an academic qualification which is taught in English and is recognised by UK NARIC as being equivalent to a BA, Master’s degree or a PHD.
  • Length of stay: The visa lets you stay for an initial three years. You can apply to extend it for two further years. After five years you may be able to apply for permanent right to remain. This will allow you to live, work and claim benefits in the UK.

Turkish businessperson visa

New applications for the Turkish businessperson visa have now closed. However, if you already have the right to be in the UK under an existing visa, you can apply to have it extended.

  • Eligibility: Must have an active Turkish businessman visa and not have broken any immigration laws.
  • Financial maintenance: The profits from this business must be enough to support you while you’re in the UK.
  • Length of stay: You can normally extend your visa as long as your business is still going. After five years, you may be able to apply for permanent right to remain. This allows you to live and work in the UK and claim benefits.

Turkish Worker Visa

New applications for the Turkish worker visa have now closed. However, you can apply for a new one if you are still in the UK.

  • Eligibility: You must have a Turkish worker visa and be applying from within the UK.
  • Financial maintenance: The profits from this business must be enough to support you while you’re in the UK.
  • Length of stay: You can normally extend your visa as long as your business is still going. After five years you may be able to apply for permanent right to remain. This allows you to live and work in the UK and claim benefits for as long as you like.
