Naturalization is a legal process that allows an individual to change their nationality and become a citizen of a country other than the one they were born in. Becoming a British citizen is a major life event as not only does it allow you to apply for a British passport, but also gives you the opportunity to participate in your local community without any restrictions.
However, naturalization is not an entitlement; it is a decision that is made by the Home Secretary if you can provide evidence that can satisfy certain legal requirements; such as:
- Applicant must be aged 18 or over
- Applicant has lived in the UK for at least 5 years without an absence longer than 450 days
- Applicant must not have had more than 90 days outside the UK in the 12 months before the application date
- Applicant must have been granted permanent residence (EEA nationals) or indefinite leave to remain in the UK at least 1 year before the application date
- Applicant must be of a good character (no criminal record, fraudulent activity, not breached immigration rules etc)
- Applicant must have sufficient knowledge of the English language and life in the UK
